SFC Running – Age-Graded Scoring

A Smarter Way to Measure Your Running Progress

As runners, our bodies change with age — but our goals, determination, and competitive spirit don’t.  At SFC Running, we use age-graded scoring to give every runner a fair and accurate way to measure performance, no matter your age, pace, or running background.  Age-grading tells you how your race time compares to the world’s best for someone your age and sex.  Instead of chasing the times you ran years (or decades!) ago, you can track how strong you truly are right now.

Why Age-Grading Matters

Age-graded scoring allows us to:

  • Compare performances across ages and distances
  • Track improvement even if raw race times plateau
  • Set meaningful goals for every decade of life
  • Celebrate “age-graded PRs” — personal bests at your age
  • Focus on long-term performance stability, not just speed

This is one of the core tools we use at SFC Running to keep you improving, engaged, and excited about your progress.

What Your Age-Grade Percentage Means

  • 90%+    — World-Class (Age-Group)
  • 80–89% — National-Class
  • 70–79% — Regional-Class
  • 60–69% — Local Competitive Level
  • Below 60% — Fitness / Recreational Level

Most of our athletes aim to stabilize or gradually increase their age-grade score over time.  Improving even 1–2% is a big win — it means you’re performing better relative to your peers

Try the Age-Grade Calculator

Use the calculator below to get your estimated age-grade score.

Enter your age, sex, race distance, and finish time to see:

  • Your age-grade percentage
  • Your equivalent performance at the Open (100%) standard
  • How your result ranks on the performance scale

This is an excellent way to understand how well you're really running — and an important benchmark we use in SFC training.

How SFC Running Uses Age-Grading in Training

 Your age-grade score helps us:

1. Stabilize your performance year to year

We measure whether you’re maintaining your fitness level even as the years go by.

2. Improve your age-grade score through smart training

Intervals, strength work, mobility, technique — all aimed at raising your relative performance.

3. Choose race distances where you perform best

Some athletes age-grade better at 10Ks, others in half marathons or marathons.

4. Set meaningful goals (not just faster times)

Maybe your 10K time doesn’t drop — but your age-grade score does.
That’s
real improvement.

5. Celebrate “PRs at Any Age”

We redefine what a personal best looks like and help you chase new achievements no matter your age
